Meher Mount is a 171-acre, semi-wilderness area near Ojai, California, dedicated to Avatar Meher Baba and open to everyone as a universal spiritual center. When Meher Baba visited Meher Mount on August 2, 1956, He said “This land is very old, I have been here before.”

Relaxation and Intimacy with the Avatar of the Age

Meher Baba’s day-long visit was one of relaxation and intimacy with the Avatar. Meher Baba told the group that “This afternoon you all have a chance to laugh and feel relaxed. Baba also has a chance to relax here…

“I come down to your level so that we can laugh and be free together, but don’t forget at the same time that I am the Highest of the High.

“I told you all that we would play, feel relaxed [here]. You do not realize how very fortunate you all are when I embrace you all.

“In Los Angeles there was no time for you all to come near Me or sit near Me as you do today… Therefore, I wanted particularly to have a [free] day here.

Love God through Nature

During His visit, Meher Baba gestured toward the outdoors and said to all those with Him: “Now, go out and see the view and try to love Baba through nature. This is all due to My love. This whole creation, this nature, all the beauty you see, all came out of Me.”

Meher Mount consists of 171 acres of dense woodland and open fields on Sulphur Mountain, about 80 miles north of Los Angeles. It is a place of great natural beauty and is infused with the sense of Meher Baba’s presence.

At 2,600 feet above the Pacific Ocean, Meher Mount enjoys a magnificent 360-degree view, including the nearby 7,000-foot peak of Topa Topa, the Channel Islands, Los Padres National Forest, and the Ojai Valley.

Baba’s Tree

For many visitors, a particular attraction is “Baba’s Tree,” a great live oak under which Meher Baba sat during His visit in 1956. According to Filis Frederick in her account of the day, “Baba went into the tent of leafy branches and sat down on the bed of dry leaves. He signaled that no one else should sit down. His eyes shone in the half-light, and He made a sign that He was happy.”

Meher Baba said during His visit, “I love Meher Mount very much and feel happy here.”

Later, Meher Baba also cryptically remarked, “I will come here again.”

Meher Baba was headed for Meher Mount in 1952 from Myrtle Beach, SC, when he had the car accident in Praque, Okalahoma on May 24. About Meher Mount, Baba said, “next to Myrtle Beach, I love this place best.”

Mission at Meher Mount
Meher Mount was left in trust to Meher Mount Corp. by Agnes Baron, who was one of the original people who found the property in 1946 at the request of Meher Baba.

According to the Articles of Incorporation, the specific purpose of Meher Mount Corp. is “to provide for the betterment of mankind by implementing the teachings of Meher Baba.”

At Meher Mount, there is also a sanctuary area consisting of the remnants of the guesthouse where Meher Baba gave darshan (His blessing). This house was destroyed in a 1985 fire, and all that remains is the fireplace which serves now as a simple gathering place where many pilgrims still feel Meher Baba’s presence and darshan.

In the main house, there is an area set aside where visitors can use the Meher Mount library, see videotapes of Avatar Meher Baba and Agnes Baron, and view a special 3-D slide show of Meher Baba during one of His visits to the United States.
